VALE – BRUCE TANTRUM

As we wrap up another successful running of the Cup Regatta, one notable absence was sadly felt amongst the CYAA family. A  regular at Cup Regatta’s over the years,  we are saddened to learn of the passing of a legend of Classic Yachting in New Zealand and a great friend of the CYAA Bruce Tantrum.

His legacy in the classic yachting world will live on in the boats he helped save from destruction through his foundational work in the Classic Yacht Charitable Trust, and the over 200 scale models that he produced over the years, many of which today grace the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in Auckland.

Bruce was one of the movers in getting the 1894 Robert Logan yacht Waitangi returned to Auckland from Melbourne, and this would go on to seed both the CYANZ and the CYAA.

For Aussies heading to Auckland for the Classic Yacht Regatta each year, Bruce was a constant, always ready to take visitors out racing on his home built yacht Paramour and it was Bruce’s sense of fun and laughter that was a major contributor to the wonderful experience that the Australians enjoyed there each year. This will be sadly missed.

Bruce is survived by his wife Shirley-Ann, his children, his grandchildren and his great children, and we offer them our deepest condolences at this time. Bruce was 87

Rest in peace Bruce, tight sails as you go on to your next adventure.

Your friends at the CYAA

A Memorial service to Bruce will be held at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron from 2pm on Wednesday, November 5.
