One week to go until the 2025 Cup Regatta kicks off on Friday afternoon with the eagerly anticipated Tumlaren Challenge. Five teams representing Tasmania, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and New Zealand will duel it out in the classic 1930’s one-designers from the pen of Knud Reimers. A bit of beer and skittles to kick off proceedings, but with it comes serious bragging rights at the 2025 Cup Regatta welcome event later that evening in the boat shed of Ferdi and Wendy Darley.
A prod, if I may. Tickets are still available for the Welcome event. Join us to celebrate the commencement of another great Cup Regatta. Welcome guests from interstate and abroad, and enjoy some delicious paella and drinks as kindly prepared and organised by Jane Williamson and the crew of Mercedes IV.
Tickets are available through Trybooking here.
Also tickets are still available for non-sailing participants to enjoy the on-water proceedings with the best view in the house on the converted Cray fishing boat, Margaret Pearl. The cruise includes lunch and a selection of beverages.
Tickets are available through Trybooking here.
In an example of unabashed self promotion, Martin Ryan has sent through a reminder of the 2024 Cup Regatta, one where he and the Mercedes III crew performed admirably taking home the Col Bandy trophy for the best performed classic yacht (Division 1).
Looking back to that event, there were 25 entrants jostling under challenging conditions (as is the norm) with 20-25kt northerlies for races 1 and 2, before a more genteel breeze of 12kt for Race 3 on the Sunday.
The results were:
Division 1 (Classics)
1st – Mercedes III (M Ryan)
2nd – Mercedes IV (J Miles)
3rd – Akala (D McNeice)
Division 2 (Tumlaren)
1st – Dingo (J Huthinson)
2nd – Ettrick (G Tait)
3rd – Zephyr – (P Bannerman)
Division 4 (Couta boat)
1st – Margarita (H Mighell)
2nd – Joan (T Kinsman)
3rd – Jennifer (R Brearley)
Tony Blake Trophy: Mercedes IV (J Miles)
Joe White Bequest Trophy:
Aside from the Tumlaren Challenge and Welcome Social the format for 2025 will include the following highlights:

Who will step up and relieve Martin of the burden of having to carry around that rather large bottle of Piper Heidsieck Cuvee Brut NV. Somebody please!!!
Entries are still open but you need to get them in here.
